Resurgent Medvedev Claims First Trophy in Over Two Years

Nineteen of Medvedev's twenty-one titles have been earned on hardcourt

A comeback the Russian player won his initial trophy for over two years with success over Frenchman Moutet in the tournament title decider.

Medvedev, a former number one, has endured a challenging season, managing just one win at the major tournaments and undergoing a meltdown at the New York tournament.

The player's inconsistency on the ATP Tour - and difficulties with his serving in especial - led to him falling of the world's top 10 and finally splitting with long-term trainer Gilles Cervara.

Now training with Thomas Johansson and Goetzke, Medvedev has consistently improved in the last few weeks - peaking in a closely contested three-set triumph over opponent Corentin Moutet.

This represents the player's initial championship since the Italian tournament and maiden on a hardcourt from spring of the previous year.

The win also indicates he has achieved twenty-one championships at 21 distinct events.

"For the first time I'm at a event with my both daughters at once, so to secure a championship is particularly special," stated world number 14 Daniil Medvedev.

"This championship is in tribute of my second daughter Victoria, because the first title I got when my child Alisa was born was for her."

The athlete, the former major winner, had been defeated in his past six title deciders, including in Halle in the past months.

His counter-punching play style and frequent reactions on the playing surface had prompted observers to wonder if his skill to perform at the elite level was concluded.

However the athlete has made changes in the past month, striving to come to the net and perform aggressively, reinforced by an improved serve.

He came back from a deficit in the first set against the challenging Moutet, securing four of the final five points to go ahead.

The competitors swapped breaks in the following set before the challenger, bidding for his initial professional victory, seized the initiative to create a decider.

He rescued four early break points in a tight third set before Medvedev secured a break to that score to serve for the match.

Fittingly, Medvedev clinched victory with a point at the front of the court, with his opponent incapable to manage a volley after over two and a half hours.
