RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several access tunnels down to the site... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their bravery," he added. "They were part of thousands of British personnel deployed over the festive period. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, after an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
