The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
